Ferrara fired by Juventus

ROME - Juventus ended Ciro Ferrara's troubled stint as coach on Friday when the Serie A club installed former AC Milan and Inter Milan boss Alberto Zaccheroni in his place until the end of the season.

"Zaccheroni (is the) new coach of Juventus," the club said on their website.

"Juventus announce that they have relieved Ciro Ferrara of his position and appointed the coach from Romagna." A source at the club confirmed that Zaccheroni has been hired until June 2010.

Ferrara's dismissal came after the Turin side's abject form continued on Thursday with a 2-1 Italian Cup quarter-final defeat at Inter Milan.

Italian media said the club were intent on sacking him even if they had won on Thursday. Juve have dropped to sixth in Serie A, 16 points behind Inter, following a run of five defeats in six league games.

The media say Juve have appointed Zaccheroni as a 'ferryman' to steady to ship while they line up a long term solution for next season, with the favourite being Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez.

His main objective is Champions League qualification or at least fourth place in Serie A to book a slot in a preliminary round.

That objective is followed by a good crack at the Europa League, now Juve's only realistic chance of winning a trophy this term as their Champions League campaign ended at the group stage last month.

Former Juve and Italy defender Ferrara took charge for two games at the end of last season after the surprise sacking of Claudio Ranieri and impressed enough to be given the role full time despite his lack of managerial experience.

It looked an inspired move when Juventus won their first four league games but his inexperience showed when he could find no answer to an ensuing drop in form, despite several formation changes.

Zaccheroni won a league title with Milan in 1999 after making a name for himself with his innovative tactics at Udinese.

But he has not worked since 2007 after less than glorious spells at Lazio, Inter and Juve's city rivals Torino.

Zaccheroni will take training later on Friday to prepare for first his match in charge, at home against former club Lazio on Sunday.

Beckham tearful when Milan drew United

MILAN - David Beckham almost cried when his AC Milan side were drawn against former club Manchester United in the Champions League last 16, the England midfielder said on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old, starting his second five-month loan at Milan from Los Angeles Galaxy, is especially looking forward to March's second leg in Manchester having won the 1999 European Cup during his 10-year Old Trafford career.

"When I heard about the tie I almost cried," Beckham said at his first news conference since arriving back in Milan.

"I love the club. It's going to be an emotional night. I have never returned to Old Trafford in six years. It has always been a special place in my heart."

Beckham, hoping to secure his England World Cup place by again playing in Europe during the U.S. close season, denied team mates might be put out if he took their place in the side.

"I am not expected to start the games. I just want to be part of the team. Players are not jealous. They were happy to see me back," he said.

"I missed the team, the players, the fans. The group is very similar. It is the same at Manchester United, it never changes," he added, admitting he was sorry to see the departures of Carlo Ancelotti, Kaka and Paolo Maldini since last season's stay.

RIGHT BACK

Milan, second in Serie A, are without long-term injury victim Massimo Oddo so new coach Leonardo has hinted he is considering playing Beckham in an unaccustomed right-back role.

Such a move would be unlikely to damage Beckham's dream of playing in a fourth World Cup in South Africa in June after England coach Fabio Capello said he would be in the squad if he was fit and in form.

"I would be happy to play in any position, in defence, in attack," said the bearded Beckham, wearing a dark suit, black tie and white shirt.

"I need to work hard. It's not guaranteed (that I'll go to the World Cup). It's not that easy. I have to work on my fitness."

Still one of the most marketable footballers in the world, Beckham reeled off one decent line in Italian: "My Italian is so-so. Happy New Year not only to Milanistas but everyone in Italy."

The midfielder started last season's loan in fine form before tiredness after a near non-stop year of football finally caught up with him. This time he wants to help Milan overhaul clear Serie A leaders and defending champions Inter Milan.

"To win a title is my number one wish. To win a title with AC Milan," he said, denying the sale of top players in the last transfer window has further weakened a predictable Serie A.

"I don't think the league has lost any charm. Definitely not. I don't know (if I would return to Milan in the future). I have to see at this point," he added, mindful that he has committed to Galaxy long-term.

How to improve the beutiful game - Planet Footbal

I would love to see a couple of small changes in the game that I think would improve the entertainmant value.

1, Extra time to be effective time. Turn off the clock every time the whistle goes and PLAY out the extra time.

2, Book players killing time in the corners at the end of games for unsporting conduct.

3, Have a fifth referee at every game, following the game on a tv screen. His role would be to note players cheating, handing them an automatic one match suspension that could be appealed with the risk of having the suspension doubled if not succesful.

I have made some mistakes, they rest in past

As I feel the tear go down my cheek,
I notice that my heart is weak,
For the love I have for you,
Will always be gold and true,
I have made some mistakes, they rest in the past,
But know my love will always last,
Even though we are a distance apart,

Ivory Coast crash out of Africa Cup of Nations

CABINDA - Substitute Hameur Bouazza struck two minutes into extra time to lift Algeria to a 3-2 upset win over Ivory Coast in a thrilling African Nations Cup quarter-final between two World Cup-bound teams on Sunday.

Algeria twice came from behind in normal time to set up a semi-final clash with either twice defending champions Egypt or Cameroon.

Algeria, who pipped Egypt in a dramatic play-off to qualify for the World Cup last November, recovered from a shaky start and eventually made the most of Ivory Coast's poor defending.

"We were feeling fine. I am very happy that we scored three goals and created so many chances," Algeria coach Rabah Saadan told a news conference.

A decisive African zone qualifying game in Cairo against Egypt and the resulting play-off in Sudan were marred by clashes but Saadane said football should prevail.

"Whatever the opponent, it must be sport and nothing else," he said.

"With Egypt, on the pitch, everything went very fine. I am looking forward to a tough game, just like today's, that would be very good for African football."

Ivory Coast thought they would advance when Abdulkader Keita fired into the top corner one minute from time but Madjid Bougherra forced the game into the extra period.

The defeat left Ivory Coast, who were unbeaten in their last 23 matches, without a continental title since 1992 despite boasting numerous top players, while Algeria can still dream of a first Nations Cup triumph since 1990.

Coach Vahid Halilhodzic was furious his team had let victory slip from their hands.

"After we scored our second goal it should have been game over. What happened is unacceptable," Halilhodzic, who suffered his first defeat in a competitive game since taking over at the head of Ivory Coast in 2008, told a news conference.

"Is the problem physical or psychological? It cannot be physical because when you are one goal up with only one minute left, you just sit back and clinch victory.

"Algeria deserve their victory."

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba was a pale shadow of his usual brilliant self, missing a couple of clear chances and failing to cause many problems for the Algerian defence.

There was a minute's silence at the Chiazi National Stadium in memory of the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

Ivory Coast scored after four minutes when Salomon Kalou found the back of the net with a shot from close range at the near post which wrong-footed Faouzi Chaouchi.

The Elephants looked dangerous on the break and Drogba shouted for a penalty after he was brought down by Rafik Halliche but referee Eddy Maillet did not blow the whistle.

LONG CROSSES

Algeria, peppering the box with long crosses that were easily cleared by the Ivory Coast defence, looked clueless until they levelled the scores five minutes from the break.

Karim Matmour collected a cross from Madjid Bougherra, powered past Cheik Tiote and Soulemane Bamba and unleashed a curling shot into the top corner.

Matmour had another chance 10 minutes into the second half but his volley from a Mourad Meghni cross went just over Boubacar Barry's bar as Algeria took control of the match.

Barry made a decisive save three minutes later when he denied Matmour after the Borussia Moenchengladbach striker had broken clear following terrible defending by Bamba.

Ivory Coast celebrated two minutes from the end when Keita fired a splendid 25-metre shot into the top corner but Algeria did not give up and forced the game into extra time when Bougherra headed home in stoppage time.

Algeria coach Rabah Saadane replaced Mourad Meghni with Bouazza and he headed past Barry two minutes into extra time from a Nadir Belhadj cross from the left.

Drogba missed another volley and Ivory Coast defender Kolo Toure netted in the dying seconds but was flagged offside.

Cameroon scrape into last eight

LUBANGO - Substitute Achille Webo set up two goals as Cameroon snatched a 2-2 draw against Tunisia to scrape into the African Nations Cup quarter-finals on Thursday.

Webo, who came on as a second-half replacement for Jean Makoun, provided Samuel Eto'o and Landry Nguemo with perfect back passes as Cameroon twice fought back to finish second in Group D.

They will take on Egypt, who beat them in the 2008 final, in Benguela, while Zambia, who went through at the top of Group D on goals scored after beating Gabon 2-1, will face Nigeria in Lubango.

Tunisia, eliminated after drawing their three games, had gone ahead in the first minute through Amine Chermiti and again in the 63rd when defender Aurelien Chedjou netted into his own goal.

Gabon, Cameroon and Zambia all finished on four points, with Zambia winning a mini-league between them on goals scored (4), ahead of Cameroon (3) and Gabon (2).

Veteran Rigobert Song, whose blunders cost Cameroon two goals in their first two games, started on the bench but that did not prevent the Indomitable Lions from conceding the early goal.

The central defence was caught snoozing when striker Chermiti connected with a Khaled Souissi cross to head home after 50 seconds.

Cameroon piled on the pressure but proved too clumsy as Tunisia's back four held on.

Tunisia keeper Aymen Mathlouthi was lucky to escape a straight red card after denying Eto'o a clear chance when he handled the ball just outside the box on the half hour.

Although Cameroon enjoyed possession, Tunisia had another chance shortly before halftime when Yassine Mikari collected a through pass from Issam Jomaa but his shot went just wide.

Webo was brought on just after the break to replace midfielder Jean Makoun and the move immediately paid off as the Mallorca striker's back pass found Eto'o, who coolly slotted home to level the contest in the 47th.

Centre back Chedjou, however, lobbed his own keeper in an attempt to clear a Mikari cross as Tunisia regained the lead in the 63rd minute.

One minute later, Nguemo equalised for Cameroon when he fired past Mathlouthi from another Webo back pass.

Tunisia finished with 10 men after defender Ammar Jemel was sent off for a second bookable offence.

WHY Are SHIPS Christened With A Bottle Of CHAMPAGNE???

Upon the launching of a newly completed ship, a bottle of champagne is usually smashed over the bow to christen it. The origins of this are a little unclear and can vary slightly from culture to culture, but for the most part it is believed that blood or wine, depending on the particular culture, was originally used as a sacrifice to the gods of the sea to allow for a smooth passage.

Namcy Reagan ship christening
Over time this became wine by those who originally used blood, and the wine was poured first into a silver chalice, from which a sip was taken before spilling the wine over the ship and casting the chalice into the sea.

After 1689, William the III of Britain, in an effort to cut costs, ordered the Royal Navy to break a bottle of liquor against the ship's side instead.

During the early 1800's, the Prince Regent set in place the custom of choosing a woman to perform the ceremony. The bottle was then to be held by the neck and thrown against the ship, however the rules had to change again after one particular bottle missed the ship and hit a spectator.

As for how the wine turned into champagne, champagne has always been associated with birth and celebration, while also having no religious association.

Guardiola agrees Barca extension

BARCELONA - Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola has agreed to extend his contract with the European and Spanish champions by one year until the end of next season.

"We had a meeting last night and (he) told me he was committed to staying for at least one more season," president Joan Laporta said at a news conference with Guardiola and sporting director Txiki Begiristain.

Guardiola will not sign his new contract until after presidential elections have been held and he has thrashed out the details with the new incumbent, added Laporta who is not allowed to stand again after his term ends in June.

"Pep Guardiola has a guarantee from the club he will be coach next season and because he has agreed and given his word to do it, it's legally binding," he said.

"This puts everyone's minds at rest because the new president and board won't have to worry about who is coach next season and the only thing they have to be concerned with is persuading Pep to say on after that."

SIX TROPHIES

Guardiola, who turned 39 on Monday, led Barca to an unprecedented six trophies in 2009 (Champions League, La Liga, King's Cup, Club World Cup and Spanish and European Super Cups).

They are undefeated in La Liga this term and lead the standings by five points from arch rivals Real Madrid with just under half the season played.

Guardiola said he decided to announce his decision to stay to avoid incessant questioning and to put the minds of players and club officials at rest.

"I would have preferred waiting until the end of the season but I very well understand how things are here," he said.

"I will wait until the new president gets to know me and to find out what he thinks of me and then we will make a relaxed decision (as to whether I stay longer)."

After joining the club's youth ranks in 1984, Dutch coach Johan Cruyff gave Guardiola his first team debut in 1990 and he had a successful playing career with Barca and Spain before taking over from Frank Rijkaard as first team coach at the end of the 2007/08 season.

James Morrison-Broken String (feat. Nelly Furtado)

Let me hold you for the last time
It's the last chance to feel again
But you broke me, now I can't feel anything

When I love you and so untrue
I can't even convince myself
When I'm speaking it's the voice of someone else

Oh, it tears me up
I tried to hold on but it hurts too much
I tried to forgive but it's not enough
To make it all okay

You can't play our broken strings
You can't feel anything
That your heart don't want to feel
I can't tell you something that ain't real

Oh, the truth hurts and lies worse
How can I give anymore
When I love you a little less than before?

Oh, what are we doing?
We are turning into dust
Playing house in the ruins of us

Running back through the fire
When there's nothing left to say
It's like chasing the very last train
When it's too late, too late

Oh, it tears me up
I tried to hold on but it hurts too much
I tried to forgive but it's not enough
To make it all okay

You can't play our broken strings
You can't feel anything
That your heart don't want to feel
I can't tell you something that ain't real

Oh, the truth hurts and lies worse
How can I give anymore
When I love you a little less than before?

But we're running through the fire
When there's nothing left to say
It's like chasing the very last train
When we both know it's too late, too late

You can't play our broken strings
You can't feel anything
That your heart don't want to feel
I can't tell you something that ain't real

Oh, the truth hurts and lies worse
So how can I give anymore
When I love you a little less than before?
Oh, you know that I love you a little less than before

Let me hold you for the last time
It's the last chance to feel again

Every body loves you

Every body loves you
when you love every body.

No one love you
if you do not love any one.

Redknapp charged with tax evasion

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has been charged with two counts of cheating the public revenue following a decision by the Crown Prosecution Service Revenue and Customs Division.

He will appear at the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court on February 11.

The CPS Revenue and Customs Division deterred that there was sufficient evidence and it was in the public interest to charge Redknapp.

He is jointly charged with Milan Mandaric, former chairman of Portsmouth who now owns Championship side Leicester City, following an investigation by the City of London Police and HM Revenue & Customs.

The charges concern two payments, totalling USD$295,000, from Mandaric to Redknapp via a bank account in Monaco, evading the tax and national insurance contributions due between April 1 2002 and November 28 2007.

The payments were in relation to Redknapp’s employment at Fratton Park.

Redknapp left Portsmouth to join Spurs in October 2008 and has drastically transformed Tottenham's fortunes, guiding them from the Premier League relegation zone to challengers for a Champions League spot in little more than a year.

Kiss me and you will see stars

Kiss me and you will see stars ….
Love me and I will give them to you.

Web Exclusive:Patrick Viera

Have you seen much of Arsenal this season?
Only on TV. I watched the game against Middlesbrough, but just the first half. I watched the Chelsea match as well. I haven't had the chance to go to the Emirates this season, last year I went four or five times.

How do you think they've played so far?
I was expecting them to be doing a little bit better than they are. I was expecting them to be closer to the top. I'm a bit disappointed so far, but there's still a long way to go, and I know that they will be there fighting for the title.

Do you think the criticism of Wenger has been fair?
That's the way football is. What is really important is to win, that's all people want. When you don't do it people start to ask questions, but when you (Arsenal) are winning nobody speaks about the way Arsene works and there are no question marks about the way he is working at the club. So when you don't win year after year people start to question his job, but I don't think it is fair because in the last 12 years he is done a tremendous job.

What would you say to the fans?

They need to be patient. You need to look at the average age of the team. They are a really young squad and of course they need time to learn and perform game, after game.

Do you think Wenger can bring Arsenal more success?
He has more success to bring. If you want to succeed you need to keep your best players. Before the start of the season they lost Mathieu Flamini, Alexander Hleb, Jens Lehmann, Gilberto Silva. They were all important players and it was too many to lose. To start this season without all those players is difficult.

Do you think the criticism will have hurt Wenger?
Of course, it's never nice to hear people talking bad about the way you are working.

Can you see Arsenal winning the title this season?
It's going to be difficult, but don't write them off. If the team can find a way to perform together week after week, they can fight for the title. I don't write them off.

Is it just consistency they are lacking?
I watched them play fantastically well against Chelsea. Coming back and winning the game is not easy away from home. I saw them play against Middlesbrough and they didn't play very well, but they are capable of beating the best or drawing against an average team. They have not found themselves yet as a team. If they find it I really believe they can be at the top with Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea.

Are Arsenal only good against the better sides because they play an open game?

It comes down to concentration. When you play against Chelsea, you know that your mind is focused, and then when you play against Middlesbrough maybe you think you will win the game easily because you are Arsenal and you have a good team. I think the Arsenal players need to get their heads right. Their motivation and concentration has to be at the same level game after game. They need to approach games against sides like Middlesbrough the same way they do against Chelsea.

Do they need to strengthen in January? Players with experience and steel?
I don't know if that is the answer, but of course new players may help them to get better as a team. What they really need at the moment is to find a togetherness, to be strong as a team and that will help them more than getting players.

Who are Arsenal's key players?
Every player, it's really difficult to single out one player. The strength of Arsenal has always been the team‚ rather than the individual players, but of course they will need Cesc Fabregas to be at his best to drive the team. You always need leadership , this can come from Cesc, it can come from William Gallas even if he lost his captaincy. Up front it can come from Emmanuel Adebayor or Robin van Persie. It takes more than individual players to perform.

Is Cesc Fabregas the right choice for captain?
I don't know if he is right choice, but he's my choice. He has been at the club quite a long time now, even if he is still young, and I think he is the one who can bring everybody together. From the outside it looks like Arsenal are not together.

Arsenal have struggled since William Gallas's outburst. What did you make of that?
It's affected the team because it was a bad distraction for the team. It was a difficult time for the team. It's important that they get focused on playing well on the pitch.

Do you think there is a danger the captaincy is too much responsibility for Cesc Fabregas?

His shoulders are big enough to carry that. When you see what he has done in the last few years at his age, it's fantastic. He won the European Championship with Spain so the character and experience he has already. He's not afraid of responsibility.

What have you made of Denilson?
He is a wonderful young player. He's got so many qualities, he's a terrific player. It's his first season playing regularly in the Premier League so he just needs time. The more he plays the better he will get. It's not easy because Flamini was the best player last year. To lose him was a big blow, now all the trust and belief is in Denilson, and he just needs to time to develop as a player. Long term he can be one of the best players at Arsenal.

Are Denilson and Fabregas too similar?
The qualities of these two players come through when they have the ball, not when they don't have it. But all the best players can play together and I'm sure they can.

Is Arsenal's match with Liverpool on Sunday December 21 key to their title aspirations?
It's a massive game for Arsenal because they are already eight points behind. They have to win this game if they want to keep fighting for the title.

How does Wenger get his sides to play beautiful football?
It's always been about the pleasure of playing together, to give the ball, to move. In training with Arsene we enjoyed ourselves, enjoyed playing the game together, had a good relationship with one another. The strength of Arsenal has been the pleasure to play together and try to enjoy ourselves. That's what is behind Wenger's vision for football, and Arsenal.

What were training sessions like?
Nothing special or different than anyone else, but he was creating a pleasure to play and enjoy ourselves. It's really easy to say, but difficult to understand.

How is Serie A different?

It's really different. It's less pleasure, more business. It feels more like going to work, rather than going to enjoy yourself.

Is it still possible for Arsenal to achieve success with their approach to the game and insistence on blooding young players?
When you look at Arsenal beating Manchester United and Chelsea you say of course it is possible. It is always hard, because you need quality but money is not a guarantee of success. I think in the last few years Arsenal have been showing to everybody that you can win without spending too much. In the last 15 years so many players came to Arsenal, like myself, who really became somebody in football at Arsenal. So I think we don't have to worry too much about Arsenal.

Chinese vs Malay

Malays just cant think properly or too free so they simply go burn down churches just because Herald used the word Allah. Maybe their general knowledge too little, so they do not know the fact that Chinese came to Malaysia earlier then Malays, but they always claim that they are the earliest to explored this land..bullshit!They tought so just bcoz Parameswara explored Melacca, only Melacca. They don even appreciate how Hang Tuah, a chinese and braviest warrior in Melacca history defended their empire.

If they want start a war, just bring it on. I wont just sit here and wait die. Starting of the war we will be the disadvantage side but slowly, we will request aid from China and Rome, it will turn out to be Chinese+Christian vs Malay. Who they wanna ask help from? Middle East?they busy-ing deling with US. Indonesia?can la, can provide them shelter after they lost the war since they have lot space.

We are a peaceful race and religion. I dunno how Muslim can burn down churches after prayer every Fri, is that how their God teach them? We are also not violent species like Hitler, but doesnt mean we are weak, just don push our limits. Stop it before its too late and turn into another May 13. This time we are much stronger.

No offense to Malays. Im just talking bout traditional-thinking Malays. Not all Malays are like that because i myself had a few nice and friendly Malay fren instead.

Racism will always exist in our heart, just we don show it out. Hope 1 day we will stay unite and become a true 1Malaysia

Rossi hoping for Italy return

Villarreal striker Giuseppe Rossi's agent claims he is hoping to return to Italy at the end of the season.

The 22-year-old Italy international started his career in the youth ranks at Parma before moving on to Manchester United and then the Yellow Submarine in 2007.

However, Rossi is ready to return to Serie A this summer after growing frustrated with life at the struggling El Madrigal outfit this season.

Juventus, AS Roma and Russian champions Rubin Kazan have all be mentioned as possible destinations.

"After the last summer, Juventus no longer contacted us," explained agent Andrea Pastorello.

"I think he will remain with Villarreal for now. There have been some important requests for him from (former Roma coach) Luciano Spalletti, as well as from Rubin, but we continue to turn them down.

"Rossi prefers the classic European leagues and he wants to return to Italy in June."

The List- The 50 best African players in history Nos 20-11

HAVE YOUR SAY... Who is the greatest African footballer of all time? Ghanaian Abedi Pele arguably became the continent's first superstar in the late eighties, but there have been a host of candidates since, among them George Weah, Samuel Eto'o and Didier Drogba. And who can forget the cheeky grin and goalscoring prowess of Roger Milla? TELL US WHAT YOU THINK Pele predicted an African nation would win thsporte World Cup by the year2000. That didn't happen, but stars from the continent have neverthelessthrilled for decades.
And with the Africa Cup of Nations underway in Angola, the latestepisode of The List trumpets the greatest players from the continent inhistory.
FromGhana's Abedi Pele to 'King' George Weah, Africans have wowed the worldwith their pace, dazzling ball control and athleticism.
Week after week we toil over our selections, and like nothing more than hearing your thoughts.
Asa caveat for the eagle-eyed out there, Mozambique-born Portugueselegend Eusebio does not feature as our List only concerns those born inAfrica who played for an African nation.
20) Yaya Toure (Ivory Coast)
The younger brother of Manchester City's Kolo (more on him later) hasbeen making quite a name for himself in Spain with Barcelona in thelast twelve months.
The Catalan giants win an unprecedentedtreble of Spanish League, Cup and European Cup last season.
Not considered a utility player but the holding midfielder is certainlyadaptable, as exemplified by his performance for Barca at centre-backin the final against United and is currently on international duty atthe African Cup of Nations.
19) Japhet N'Doram (Chad)
Many players have made the move from Africa to Europe but few have done so with as much success as N'Doram.
After a successful spell with Cameroon club Tonnerre Yaounde, theChadian striker (right) moved to France with FC Nantes where he was to enjoy aproductive seven years, scoring 76 goals in 173 league appearances.
His career highlights include scoring the winner over Juventus in 1994in the Champions League, his Ligue 1 winners medal with Nantes in 1995and his 13 international goals in 36 appearances for Chad.
18) Marc Vivien Foe (Cameroon)A much loved and talented player whose name will sadly be rememberedfor the nature of how he lost his life in 2003 while on internationalduty for the Indomitable Lions.
The former Lens, West Ham, Lyons and Manchester City midfielder was 28when he passed away in the 72nd minute of the Confederations Cup clashwith Columbia after suffering heart failure - the outpouring of griefwas tribute to Foe as a man and the regard in which he was held as aplayer.
Foe: Playing for Cameroon against Saudi Arabia at the 2002 World Cup finals
17) Kolo Toure (Ivory Coast)The eldest of the Toure siblings and the List believes he's also thebest! Kolo has proved himself as one of the Premier League's bestdefenders at Arsenal and, more recently, he's prospered at ManchesterCity.
Toure cost Arsene Wenger a paltry £150,000 in 2002, but City had toshell out £16m seven years later for the pacy, strong andtough-tackling centre-half.
Case for the defence: Kolo Toure in action for Ivory Coast against Egypt in 2008
16) Benni McCarthy (South Africa)One of the most successful South African footballers in history -McCarthy enjoyed success with Ajax, winning the Dutch league title in1998 and was later part of Jose Mourinho's all-conquering Porto side of2004.
Portuguese and Champions League success came his way before a £2.5mmove to the Premier League with Blackburn in 2006 where he finishedsecond top scorer in the 2006-2007 season with 18 league goals.
South African star: Benni McCarthy in action during a friendly clash with Australia in 2008
15) Rashidi Yekini (Nigeria)
Yekini liked goals - and lots of them. The Nigerian striker baggedgoals and broke records consistently during his 24-year career.
He bagged a remarkable 37 goals for the national side in just 70appearances - a record for the Super Eagles.
He also helped Nigeria win the1994 Africa Cup of Nations where he was, unsurprisingly, topgoalscorer.
Eye for goal: Yekini
14) Lakhdar Belloumi (Algeria) Given Algeria's recent showing at the Africa Cup of Nations, they couldreally do with someone like Belloumi in their side. Still, at 51 heprobably wouldn't have been able to help out in their 3-0 defeat toMalawi.
He refused to play in Europe but hios playing record was neverdiminished - he participated at 1980 Olympics and at two World Cups - in 1982 and 1986 - earning himself 87 caps and scored 40 goals.
His greatest moment came in 1982 when he scored the winning goal in theshock 2-1 win over West Germany at the World Cup in Spain.
Belloumi: challenging Brazil's Careca at the 1986 World Cup finals in Mexico
13) Fredi Kanoute (Mali) Standing the test of time, Kanoute has proven himself time and again he's one of the greatest African strikers of all time.
The lanky and languid former Lens, West Ham and Tottenham forward ishas proven a real hit with Sevilla, scoring 63 goals in his 133 leagueappearances.
Eligible for France but chose to stick with his Malian heritage he wasnamed African Footballer of the year in 2007 and is currently oninternational duty at the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola.
One of the very best: Kanoute fights for the ball with John Obi Mikel during Mali's clash with Nigeria at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations
12) Emmanuel Adebayor (Togo) The Togolese striker polarises opinion between fans - is he animposing, highly skilful striker with a keen eye for goal or a divisiveand expensive trouble-maker?
Answers to questions only Mark Hughes, Arsene Wenger and Roberto Mancinican answer but we can be certain that he is devastating in front ofgoal - from powerful headers against his former club to acrobaticoverhead strikes in Europe, Adebayor is one of the best.
Top forward: Emmanuel Adebayor playing for Togo in their clash with France at the 2006 World Cup finals
11) Abedi Pele (Ghana) Abedi Pele
Just missing out on out top ten is Pele, the Ghanaian striker who turned out for 18 clubs during his 22-year career and was voted by his namesake, the Brazilian Pele, as one of the greatest 125 footballers to have ever lived.
One of the first African stars to really make an impact in Europe, Pele (right) won major honours with Marseille, including the Champions League in 1993 and four French Ligue 1 titles during his two stints at the club.
Not shy in front of goal for Ghana either, 33 strikes in 73 appearances make him the country's top goalscorer and he featured in five Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

Milan restart with a bang

It was business as usual as Serie A resumed after the winter break, the top three all winning with AC Milan sounding a significant warning to leaders FC Internazionale Milano as they hit five against Genoa CFC.

Beckham debut
The Nerazzurri started the day as they ended it, eight points clear of nearest rivals Milan, but any ideas of an easy stroll to their fifth successive title were soundly eliminated. Marco Borriello struck twice as the Rossoneri recovered from going 1-0 down to overwhelm Genoa 5-2, Ronaldinho and Klaas Jan Huntelaar both converting penalties as David Beckham enjoyed a rousing return to the starting XI at San Siro.

Public holiday
Inter also included a familiar new name in their lineup – though Goran Pandev never wore the famous blue and black first time round – as Mario Balotelli's 12th-minute strike earned a 1-0 victory against AC Chievo Verona. Juventus, kicking off a few hours later as part of a full programme of Epiphany holiday fixtures, also registered early through Hasan Salihamidžić at Parma FC. Former Bianconeri striker Nicola Amoruso equalised for the sixth-placed hosts midway through the first half, but parity proved short-lived as six minutes before the break Paolo Castellini put through his own net to inadvertently restore the visitors' lead. Juve played the final 17 minutes with ten men following Martín Cáceres's dismissal.

Roma held
There was late drama in Sardinia as Cagliari Calcio scored twice in added time to draw 2-2 with AS Roma, a turn of events which allowed SSC Napoli, 2-0 victors at lowly Atalanta BC, to rise to fourth. Alberto Gilardino struck two as UEFA Champions League contenders ACF Fiorentina also won away, 5-1 against struggling AC Siena. With UC Sampdoria and US Città di Palermo sharing the spoils with a 1-1 draw, the result propelled the Viola ahead of both and into seventh, a place above an AS Bari team which beat Udinese Calcio 2-0. Elsewhere, S.S Lazio debutant Sergio Floccari scored two in the capital club's 4-1 home win against AS Livorno Calcio, while fourth-from-bottom Bologna FC lost 1-0 to the team directly below them, Calcio Catania.

Inter storm back to beat Siena 4-3

MILAN - Depleted Serie A leaders Inter Milan produced a remarkable late comeback to beat struggling Siena 4-3 on Saturday having been 3-2 down with two minutes left.

Massimo Maccarone twice put bottom side Siena ahead in Milan but two free-kicks from Wesley Sneijder, the second to equalise late on, and Walter Samuel's injury-time winner sent the Italian champions 11 points clear.

Inter's lead will be cut whatever happens in the meeting between second-placed AC Milan and third-placed Juventus in Turin on Sunday.

Siena took a surprise lead on 18 minutes when Maccarone was allowed to storm forward from the halfway line and fire in a 25-metre drive.

Inter were level soon after when striker Diego Milito, a revelation since his close-season move from Genoa, lashed in his 11th league goal of the season from a tight angle.

A textbook curling free-kick from Dutchman Sneijder put the hosts ahead on 36 minutes only for on-loan Juventus midfielder Albin Ekdal to sweep the ball home for Siena just moments later after arriving unmarked in the area.

Inter were without the suspended Mario Balotelli. Cristian Chivu and Esteban Cambiasso were among those injured while Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o was also absent at the African Nations Cup.

ROMA FOURTH

Defender Chivu fractured his skull in Wednesday's 1-0 win at Chievo and increasing crowd favourite Sneijder held up a shirt to the San Siro saying "Return soon Cris" after his first goal.

Midfielder Dejan Stankovic also limped off just as the second period was starting, leaving Inter without any real shape and they paid the price midway through the half when Maccarone netted his second from the edge of the area.

But by winning four Italian championships in a row, Inter have consistently shown they never give up and it was little surprise when Sneijder scored again on 88 minutes, this time using power to rifle in a free kick off the post.

Coach Jose Mourinho's record of 127 home league matches without defeat, including his time at Chelsea and Porto, was suddenly safe.

It got even better for the Portuguese when defender Samuel used all the skill of a striker to turn on the edge of the box and thump the winner deep into stoppage time.

"I am so happy. We really suffered but the win is so important," the Argentine substitute told Sky TV after ripping off his shirt in the rain and charging towards the corner.

In the early game, AS Roma moved back up to fourth after battling to a 1-0 home win over Chievo despite having goalkeeper Doni sent off on 11 minutes.

Daniele De Rossi headed in a corner in the first minute but Roma's hopes of victory looked to have suffered when Doni, only playing because of an injury to fellow Brazilian Julio Sergio, raced out of his box and handled Elvis Abbruscato's shot.

However, the hosts continued to have the best chances and new striker Luca Toni earned a penalty in the second half but David Pizarro, on spotkick duties with Francesco Totti again injured, saw his effort saved by Stefano Sorrentino.

Owl City-Vanilla Twilight

The stars lean down to kiss you
And I lie awake and miss you
Pour me a heavy dose of atmosphere

'Cause I'll doze off safe and soundly
But I'll miss your arms around me
I'd send a postcard to you, dear
'Cause I wish you were here

I'll watch the night turn light-blue
But it's not the same without you
Because it takes two to whisper quietly

The silence isn't so bad
'Til I look at my hands and feel sad
'Cause the spaces between my fingers
Are right where yours fit perfectly

I'll find repose in new ways
Though I haven't slept in two days
'Cause cold nostalgia
Chills me to the bone

But drenched in vanilla twilight
I'll sit on the front porch all night
Waist-deep in thought because
When I think of you I don't feel so alone

I don't feel so alone, I don't feel so alone

As many times as I blink
I'll think of you tonight
I'll think of you tonight

When violet eyes get brighter
And heavy wings grow lighter
I'll taste the sky and feel alive again

And I'll forget the world that I knew
But I swear I won't forget you
Oh, if my voice could reach
Back through the past
I'd whisper in your ear
Oh darling, I wish you were here

Real Madrid Midfielder Rafael Van Der Vaart Thinks Barcelona Are 'Human' This Season

The Dutch midfielder thinks Barca may have taken their foot of the pedal...

Jan 8, 2010 8:52:11 PM

Van der Vaart - Real Madrid (Firo)
Real Madrid midfielder Rafael Van der Vaart has revealed he thinks league rivals Barcelona may be becoming a little complacent.

The Merengues currently sit two points behind the Blaugrana at the top of La Liga and the Dutch midfielder is quoted in El Mundo Deportivo as saying he thinks Barca look a little more “calmer” and that “they are human" after they were held at home to Villarreal and lost the first leg of their Copa del Rey encounter to Sevilla.

The former Ajax man also suggested that current coach Manuel Pellegrini was “always positive” and that he “wants to be an important part of Real Madrid.”

Finally, when asked whether he felt he could force his way into the side ahead of Brazilian midfielder Kaka, he replied, “I'm not afraid of anybody, I want to fight and we can also play together.”

Copa Del Rey Round Up: First Leg Shocks For Osasuna And Mallorca; Malaga Edge Getafe

Hercules 2-1 Osasuna

Segunda Division side Hercules secured a deserved 2-1 victory over La Liga side Osasuna in Valencia this evening, to take a narrow advantage into the second leg.

Jose Antonio Camacho’s top flight outfit started the match well, but fell behind against the run of play on 17 minutes, thanks to former Deportivo La Coruna star Cristian. Neat build up from Francisco Pena and Jorge Tote created the opportunity, and the winger slotted the ball home from inside the area to give their visitors from Pamplona a nightmare start.

Cristian went close once more for the Blanquiazules before half-time while Del Olmo headed over from a decent position, but Osasuna emerged with purpose after the interval and levelled soon after through promising youngster Jorge Galan.

The 19-year old, making his first start for Camacho’s side, pounced after home goalkeeper Unai Alba failed to hold onto a Lopez Ruper shot, and showed excellent striking instincts to slide the ball home.

However, Hercules were not to be denied in front of their loyal fans, and edged ahead in the tie thanks to Del Olmo, who reacted first inside the area to stun Los Rojillos, and give the underdogs a fighting chance of progressing to the next round.

Rayo Vallecano 2-1 Real Mallorca

In another surprise score-line, high-flying Real Mallorca were also humbled 2-1, by Rayo Vallecano in a thrilling match in Madrid.

Midfielder Sanchez Michel handed Pepe Mel’s men a lead after just sixteen minutes, but they were quickly pegged back by the side who are challenging for Champions League football next season.

Julio Alvarez was in the right place at the right time, converting a Paulo Pezzolano knockdown inside the box, and parity was restored.

However, the Islanders’ task was made more difficult soon after when full-back Felipe Mattioni picked up a needless second booking to take an early bath, and from then on Rayo took control of proceedings.

They immediately regained the lead thanks to Juan Collantes, who headed past German Lux from close range, and in the second half they bombarded the visitors’ goal, attempting to extend their advantage.

In the closing stages they perhaps should have moved further ahead, but in the end they had to settle for a single goal lead – and face a daunting trip to the ONO Estadi and one of the best home records in Europe.

Malaga 2-1 Getafe

Struggling Malaga defeated Getafe and survived a late rally from the visitors to take a 2-1 lead to the Coliseum Alfonso Perez for next week’s second leg.

Midfielder Apono gave the Andalusian side an ideal start, slamming home off of Jordi Codina’s upright after ten minutes of play, but the Azulones should have drawn level, with Casquero and Pedro Leon squandering decent chances to level the tie.

Malaga however defended stoutly, and made it two just before the interval. Striker Edinho tried a speculative effort that was on target, but Codina could not deal with the shot and the ball somehow made its way past him and into the net.

Getafe needed an own goal, however, twenty minutes from time in order to give themselves a life-line for the return clash. Substitute Milan Stepanov diverted the ball the helpless Roberto, and the Madrid club sensed a comeback.

Despite both sides having their chances in the final stages they were wasteful in front of goal, and while Malaga hold the lead, Getafe will feel confident of overturning the deficit in six days time.

Good FRIENDS are hard to find,

Good FRIENDS are hard to find,
harder to leave,
and impossible to forget.

Drogba, Terry, Essien in l'Equipe best XI

The end of the year saw any number of polls as to who is the bestest player in the world. Other magazines published their best XI of the year. That of prestigious newspaper L`Equipe raised a few eyebrows.

By a fairly general consensus, Lionel Messi was the best player of 2009. He won the France Football Ballon d`Or, which is widely recognised as the most prestigious award given to an individual player. And he also raffled the inaugural FIFA World Player award. Few people would argue with that. FIFA also published their best XI of the year, which contained John Terry as one of the best centrebacks.

But the end of the year XI in French sports daily L`Equipe raised a few eyebrows, not only because it contained 3 Chelsea players, but because they couldn`t find room for the most expensive players in the world today, Kaka or Cristiano Ronaldo.

L`Equipe`s XI of 2009 looks like this: Iker Casillas in goal, Dani Alves, Nemanja Vidic, John Terry, Patrice Evra in defence, Michael Essien, Yaya Touré, Xavi, Iniesta in midfield, and Lionel Messi and Didier Drogba as forwards. That`s quite a line-up.

It`s also not without controversy. Several of the names on the list would be without dispute: Alves, Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, Vidic, Casillas: you could make quite an easy case for them being the best in their position. The arguments for John Terry and Patrice Evra might be a little lengthier, but that is not an outlandish view. Is Evra better than Ashley Cole, for instance?

Michael Essien as one of the 4 best midfielders in the world? Us Chelsea fans know that, but would others be prepared to accept it? It`s all the more surprising that Essien was out injured for the first months of 2009, not to mention the last month. We just hope that he comes back from the African Cup of Nations without any kind of knock.

Chelsea`s upsurge at the beginning of the year began with Guus Hiddink returning order to the mess created by Phil Scolari. It also coincided with Michael Essien`s return. Chelsea`s slip-up in December could be partly attributed to Essien`s absence. He`s a rock in midfield, both as the 'Makelele` but also going forward. Yes, his place in the world`s best is deserved. Liverpool fans can froth at the mouth, but here`s the thing: Michael Essien eats asparagus and then micturates on Ickle Stevie Gerrard MoTM MBE. From the top of that building just opened in Dubai. Fact.

Didier Drogba in that list? Well, right now, is there a better forward in the world? No really? Fernando Torres could be said to be not a bad striker, but he`s been out much of the season. Plus he plays in a team that has forgotten what silver smells like. Right now, for the beginning of the 2009-2010 season, Drogba is the best striker in England (his numbers attest to that), so there is a strong case to be made for him being in the world`s best.

So there you have it: L`Equipe have 3 Chelsea players as the world`s best. Logically they have 5 Barça players, but only two from ManU? That`s despite Chelsea having won less last year than Siralex`s lot. Hand on my heart, I`d say that that`s quite generous. Even if the players in question are outstanding.

But the real talking point is the absence of both Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo from this list. CR96, after all, came second in the Ballon d`Or and the FIFA World Player award. How come he didn`t make l`Equipe`s listing?

Let`s say straight off: both absences are fully justified. CR96 had an average season at ManU last year (even though the club didn`t do badly). Since he joined Real Madrid, the most noteworthy thing he`s done is to be presented in front of 80,000 muppets and to hog the headlines because of his €96 million transfer fee. As a player, he`s banged in a few, but he`s also created a Ronaldo-dependency as real Madrid has been redesigned to let their show-pony shine. L`Equipe is expressing dismay at the fact that football has been reduced to this.

In fact, so strongly did they feel about Ronaldo not being worthy of inclusion that they considered that Samuel Eto`o was the third best striker, CR96 was only the fourth. Needless to say the Madrid press felt that this was a vicious snub.

A similar blow was delivered to Kaka, once widely considered as one of the finest central midfielders of his generation. But his move to Madrid generated headlines but little else: the Brazilian evangelist`s decline has been noticed even by the Madrid press. Xabi Alonso has been garnering far more plaudits from the centre of the park.

Above all, L`Equipe was sanctioning a certain type of football. Praise for Barça is all the most justified as most of the players in the list (Xavi, Iniesta, Messi) were entirely homegrown. L`Equipe is a serious paper, not a trashy tabloid like 'Marca` and 'As`. It perpetuates a tradition of trying to write about sport in a non-partisan manner and with intelligence. They have therefore criticised the obscene amounts of money splashed out by megalomaniac Madrid President Florentino Perez, and the collection of star players like Panini stickers, with no thought of balance or teamwork. For instance the Ballon d`Or is considered the most prestigious award for a player, everybody has noticed that one Real Madrid player has ever won the award as a Madrid player, contrary to the Florentino Perez way of buying players after they`ve won the award (of which there have been 13).

That`s why L`Equipe felt that Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka was not worthy of inclusion in their 2009 best XI. That John Terry, Didier Drogba and Michael Essien were deemed worthy is testament to the Chelsea players` qualities.

ITV Football Podcast: Manchester United Cup shock, pedestrian Liverpool, Bolton move for Coyle

With Manchester United being dumped out of the FA Cup by Leeds, Liverpool stumbling to a draw against a lowly Championship side and Bolton on the brink of grabbing Owen Coyle from Burnley, what a week to launch ITV Sport's first-ever podcast.

Host Ned Boulting is joined by Andy Townsend, Clive Tyldesley and itv.com's Football Editor Mark Segal to dissect the FA Cup third-round weekend and to look ahead to who could be moving where in the transfer window.

Manchester United's third-round exit is still leading the football debate this week, with our panel attempting to explain Sir Alex Ferguson's post-match rant, while also asking how Michael Owen missed his late chance.

But while Manchester United's defeat could be considered a blip, things appear to be getting much worse for Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez.

Liverpool were held by Reading in their third-round tie and their pedestrian football won few fans among our panel.

In the third part of the show we look at the opening of the January transfer window and how Bolton have managed to persuade Owen Coyle to leave Burnley and take up residence at the Reebok Stadium.

Barcelona Defender Gaby Milito Happy To Return To First Team Action Despite Sevilla Defeat

Mixed emotions for the Argentinian after 88 weeks out of football...

Barcelona defender Gaby Milito says he felt good after returning to first team football in the Blaugrana's 2-1 defeat to Sevilla in the first leg of their fifth round Copa del Rey tie at Camp Nou.

The 29-year-old Argentinian has not featured in a competitive fixture for Barca since rupturing a cruciate ligament in his right knee during the UEFA Champions League semi final defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford in April 2008 and subsequently had to watch from the sidelines as his team produced the greatest season in the club's history last year.

He admitted afterwards that he dreamed of making a return for Barcelona at Camp Nou but said that the defeat spoiled the return. Goals from Alvaro Negredo and Diego Capel either side of a Zlatan Ibrahimovic goal ensured the Andalusian side go into the second leg in pole position to book a place in the quarter finals.

"The truth is that I feel good. I still lack football, but that will improve with minutes and games," he told AS.

"I had dreamed of this, in our stadium, with our people. Too bad it has been a bit tarnished by the result."

Dossena agrees £4.4m Napoli move

Andrea Dossena has agreed a return to Italy with Serie A side Napoli, according to reports in Italy this evening.

The left-back has been widely expected to leave Liverpool during the transfer window, with talks having taken place with Atletico Madrid also.

Napoli’s sporting director is reported to have flown to Merseyside on Monday to agree the deal, at the third time of asking having previously attempted to sign the defender in the summer. Previously Atletico looked the more likely destination having held talks over a loan move linked to Maxi Rodriguez’s imminent move in the opposite direction.

Dossena never settled in English football but will always have a place in Liverpool fan’s hearts after scoring, incredibly, the final goal in both the 4-0 win over Real Madrid and the 4-1 win at Old Trafford in a famous week last March.

Rafa Benitez will now be free to complete the signing of Rodriguez and move on to other transfer window targets.

One of those targets for Benitez is to offload Ukranian forward Andriy Voronin, who has spent the last week sunning himself in Miami. The Mirror reports this morning that a £1.5m move to Dynamo Moscow is poised to be completed. Fantastic news for Liverpool fans!

Leeds United's FA Cup hero Jermaine Beckford free to leave for right price

Leeds United manager Simon Grayson admitted the club will consider selling FA Cup match-winner Jermaine Beckford during the transfer window, despite the 26 year-old earning legendary status by scoring the Elland Road club’s first winner at Old Trafford since 1981.

Championship leaders Newcastle United are understood to have made a £1.25 million bid for Beckford, who was an RAC windscreen fitter prior to his arrival from non-league Wealdstone in 2006.

Beckford’s first-half winner against Premier League champions United was his 20th goal of the season, but with his contract due to run out in the summer, Grayson admits that Leeds will not stand in the player’s way if they receive a substantial offer during January.

Grayson said: “There has been speculation about Newcastle and Beckford, but my best case scenario is that Jermaine signs a new contract or gets us the goals to earn promotion and then leaves.

“We have stressed that there will be three scenarios with Jermaine. He signs a new contract, he leaves at the end of the season or we sell him and get some money which we think is too good an opportunity to turn down.

“Strikers are a precious commodity and we won’t be letting him go on the cheap. That is the scenario we are going to go down.

“He has shown today what he is all about. He has worked ever so hard for the team and he has taken his opportunity.

“Money talks with any player, but we are not looking to sell him. People can speculate about him and we knew that, as soon as the window opened, there would be talk about him.

“We have made a decent amount of money today and got back on an even keel on the financial front, so we don’t want him to leave unless it is something that suits him and the club.”

Beckford’s goal erased Brian Flynn from the Leeds record books as the last man to score a winner for the club against United at Old Trafford.

But despite Beckford’s personal achievement, Grayson insisted that his team’s victory was down to more than one player.

He said: “I told the players that, if you can perform at Old Trafford, somebody will be a hero.

“Everybody talked about Brian Flynn and he reminded me that he was the last player to score a winner at Old Trafford in 1981 when I saw him recently.

“Jermaine Beckford will get the credit now, but we are immensely proud of our team and what they have done today.

“We knew it would be difficult coming to Old Trafford, but we told the players to do themselves justice and be proud of themselves, whether they came back to the dressing room with a win, defeat or draw. They certainly did that.

“United have fantastic players, but we had a plan to contain them. We knew that we could deny them possession and that we had people who, when we had possession of the ball, could hurt them.”

From goalkeeper Casper Ankergren through to Beckford, Leeds outfought United throughout and Grayson confessed that his team were rarely troubled by Ferguson’s men.

He said: “Our keeper made some good saves, but he was not being peppered on a regular basis.

“He did what he had to do because he had players in front of him defending properly and making tackles.

“Our club has had a lot of negativity over the last five or six years with administration and relegation, so this is a result for our fans.

“Leeds is a big club. We are known in Europe and worldwide for our achievements in the 1960s and 70s, but we are in League One for a reason.

“I want to be back here managing this club in the Premier League, though, and we have to go through the Championship first to do that.”

Plymouth Argyle 0 Newcastle United 0

PLYMOUTH Argyle earned themselves a long trip to St James’ Park after holding a much-changed Newcastle side to a goalless draw in their FA Cup third-round clash at Home Park.

Newcastle boss Chris Hughton made seven changes to his starting line-up and his side shaded the first half, with Danny Guthrie twice going close to giving them the lead.

The second half descended into a war of attrition but Newcastle captain Nicky Butt came close to winning it late on when his 25-yard volley was superbly saved by Plymouth goalkeeper Romain Larrieu.

However, Plymouth held out for the draw and with it an 800-mile round trip to the north east for the replay.

The result was Newcastle’s second consecutive goalless draw while Plymouth boss Paul Mariner saw his side extend their unbeaten run to three matches.

Newcastle’s new-look line-up struggled early on, with Rory Fallon having a header saved by visiting goalkeeper Tim Krul.

However, soon after, Newcastle fashioned the first real chance of the game when Ryan Taylor crossed for Fabrice Pancrate, who reacted too slowly and allowed the ball to bounce off his standing leg.

In-form Plymouth looked dangerous going forward and Carl Fletcher was off target with an effort from distance before Luke Summerfield had a shot blocked by Tamas Kadar.

Alan Judge volleyed wide as the home side continued to press forward while at the other end Pancrate was inches away from getting on the end of a dangerous free-kick from Taylor.

As the half wore on, Newcastle began to dominate and Shola Ameobi had the ball in the back of the net after Pancrate hit a post but referee Alan Wiley ruled the effort out for a dubious foul by Pancrate on Gary Sawyer.

Ameobi was giving the Plymouth defence plenty of cause for concern and five minutes before the break his cross found Guthrie, who back-heeled just wide.

The former Bolton man came even closer on the stroke of half-time when his powerful strike from the edge of the box was superbly tipped round the post by Larrieu.

The second half got off to a feisty start, with Plymouth’s Karl Duguid and Newcastle striker Nile Ranger both receiving yellow cards from Wiley following a tussle.

That skirmish set the tone as the clash descended into a scrappy affair, with neither side able to mount any sort of purposeful attack.

Plymouth’s Chris Clark produced a poor final ball when well placed on the left before slicing a poor effort towards the corner flag moments later.

At the other end, Danny Simpson beat a couple of challenges only to drive the ball wide with options ahead of him limited.

With four minutes remaining, Butt saw his looping volley tipped over by Larrieu as Plymouth managed to hold on for a draw.
