Happy New Year 2010!

Good resolutions are simply checks
that men draw on a bank
where they have no account.
Happy New Year.

Time has no divisions to mark its passage; there is never a thunderstorm or blare of trumpets to announce the beginning of a new month or year. Even when a new century begins it is only we mortals who ring bells and fire off pistols.

Drop the last year into the silent limbo of the past. Let it go, for it was imperfect, and thank God that it can go

In the New Year, may your right hand always be stretched out in friendship, never in want.

Youth is when you're allowed to stay up late on New Year's Eve. Middle age is when you're forced to. ~Bill Vaughn

New Year’s Reflections
Looking back on the months gone by,
As a new year starts and an old one ends,
We contemplate what brought us joy,
And we think of our loved ones and our friends.
Recalling all the happy times,
Remembering how they enriched our lives,
We reflect upon who really counts,
As the fresh and bright new year arrives.
And when I/we ponder those who do,
I/we immediately think of you.
Thanks for being one of the reasonsI'll/We'll have a Happy New Year!

Happy New Year 2010!!

Portsmouth 1-4 Arsenal: The Daily Mirror match report

A happy New Year for Arsene Wenger. But deeply worrying times for Avram Grant.

The start of a new decade may at last herald the coming of age for Wenger’s emerging Arsenal youngsters after a commanding win at Fratton Park thrust them firmly back into the title race.

It was ruthless, clinical and just the sort of message which Arsenal needed to send out as they drew to within four points of Premier League leaders Chelsea with a game in hand.

But 2010 promises to be a very different year for Portsmouth as even their fiercely loyal fans at last turned on the club’s board as they chanted abuse at the Arab owners and sang: “Where’s our money gone?“

It was little wonder either as last night’s defeat came after a devastating day in which a winding-up petition was served by the HMRC on the crisis club.

And, frankly, the last team you want to play when you are at your lowest ebb is Arsenal at the moment as Wenger’s football artists tore Portsmouth apart with a ruthless victory.

But perhaps even more worrying for Portsmouth was that Arsenal did not even need to be anywhere near their best to beat the bottom club who, up until last night, had always shown heart despite their deficiencies.

In the end, it was all too easy and no matter the crisis at Fratton Park this was still a result which will make the rest of the Premier League sit up, take notice and realise that Arsenal mean business.

Wenger may lack the experienced and hardened campaigners of their title rivals Chelsea and Manchester United, but they have bright and promising talent to give them hope for the new decade.

The second half of the noughties have been lean times for Wenger and even the staunchest of Arsenal fans have questioned his youth policy and over-reliance on young players who have not won a trophy since 2005.

But in Abou Diaby, Aaron Ramsey and Alex Song, they have young players who have developed under Wenger and still have more room for improvement.

Ramsey was 20 on Boxing Day and gets better with every game while Diaby is finally fulfilling his huge potential and showing more consistency. Song scored the pick of Arsenal’s four goals with a stunning 81st minute header.

But Wenger was also quick to praise his midfield trio afterwards for their physical presence and the way they dug in when Portsmouth briefly threatened in the first half.

It is clear that Arsenal not only have quality throughout the team but another ingredient which has been sorely lacking in recent seasons.

Even though Arsenal missed the quality and skill of Cesc Fabregas - and Theo Walcott also dropped out with a muscle injury after yet another setback - they had enough steel to see them through.

Maybe Arsenal were stung and humiliated by the 3-0 humiliation to Chelsea which left them 11 points adrift in the title title race. Maybe they were just out of form. Whatever the reason, that seems a distant memory now.

Arsenal are firing on all cylinders and even without a recognised centre forward, they are the top scorers in the Premier League as last night’s tally of four took them to 51 in 19 games.

After a laboured start, it took a stroke of luck to get Arsenal underway in the 27th minute as Eduardo’s free kick deflected heavily off Younes Kaboul and past Pompey’s helpless keeper Asmir Begovic.

Portsmouth refused to give up until the mood changed after Arsenal got their second in the 42nd minute when Samir Nasri finished off a lovely flowing passing move involving Song, Eduardo and Ramsey.

That was the cue for Portsmouth fans to chant for their own captain, Aaron Mokoena, to be sent off rather than just get a booking for a foul. Portsmouth were jeered off at half time and Mokoena really was that bad.

Portsmouth’s fans chanted abuse at the club’s board and it got worse when substitute Anthony Vanden Borre, on for Mokoena, was dispossessed by Ramsey and the Welsh youngster rifled home a fierce 69th minute drive.

Portsmouth gave themselves some pride when Nadir Belhadj bravely battled to fire home a 74th minute consolation.

But Arsenal finished on a high when Nasri provided a beautiful cross and Song rose at the far post to head home as if he were a centre forward.

It left Arsenal on cloud nine and Portsmouth in despair. Rarely has there been a greater divide between the Premier League’s haves and have nots.

Arsenal boss Wenger: Ambitious clubs have shook up Premier League

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says the ambitions of clubs outside the top four have shaken up the Premier League.

Arsenal have lost four times in the Premier League and Wenger accepts the margins for further error are thin if they are to stand any chance of overhauling Chelsea and Manchester United.

"When you are manager, you never think that you can afford a blip, but when we were 11 points behind Chelsea, we definitely could not," he said.

"I still believe that today, but now we are in a position to take advantage of the other teams dropping points."

Wenger continued: "Something has deeply changed in the Premier League.

"There are now more teams aspiring to be in the top four. Already at the start, financially the desire is there.

"The message given to the players at Manchester City, at Tottenham, at Aston Villa, is: 'now, we want to go in there'. That has changed completely the structure."

Alex Ferguson wants Wayne Rooney to spearhead United's title charge

Alex Ferguson wants Wayne Rooney to spearhead United's title charge

• 'Wayne can step forward and be the main man'
• Berbatov, Owen and Scholes hope to take on Wigan

Sir Alex Ferguson is looking for Wayne Rooney to maintain the form that helped Manchester United to destroy Hull City on Sunday. Rooney scored his 14th goal of the season and created the other two in the team's 3-1 victory.

With Ferguson's defensive injury problems starting to ease, the United manager is now looking to build some momentum heading into the second half of a campaign which could yet end with his side being crowned champions for an unprecedented fourth consecutive Barclays Premier League season.

For that to happen, however, Ferguson acknowledges he needs Rooney to be fit and firing. After a couple of lethargic performances from the 24-year-old, his most recent effort signalled a revival, one that his manager is looking for Rooney to continue.

"Wayne was fantastic on Sunday. That was the Wayne Rooney we know," said Ferguson. "He had a quiet spell for two or three matches but he was explosive at Hull. He was a constant threat. That is the kind of form we are hoping for because when he is playing like that he is hard to handle."

However, ahead of tomorrow night's match with Wigan Athletic at Old Trafford, Ferguson is expecting others to step forward too with Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen and Paul Scholes all hoping to play a part.

"Wayne can step forward and be the main man but there are a few who have to step forward in that respect," said Ferguson. "We are coming to the time now. The challenge is there.

"The league is so tight and teams are taking points off each other that you don't expect. It means a consistent run from someone will give them a great chance.

"Our experience of run-ins is good. We know we can handle that part. The important thing is to beat Wigan tomorrow which would put us into the position I hoped we could get to, a couple of points off the leaders coming into the new year."

Chelsea back on course after derby delight

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea won for only the second time in eight matches to extend their Premier League lead to five points after coming from behind to beat Fulham 2-1 in a dramatic west London derby on Sunday.

Fulham needed just four minutes to go ahead at Stamford Bridge through Zoltan Gera before Carlo Ancelotti's side scored twice in two minutes late on though Didier Drogba and a Chris Smalling own-goal to rescue all three points.

But second-placed champions Manchester United will cut Chelsea's lead back to two points if they win at home to Wigan on Wednesday.

Fulham, who've already beaten Manchester United and Liverpool this season, stunned their hosts when the Blues failed to clear a Paul Konchesky cross and Hungarian midfielder Gera hooked an acrobatic shot past Petr Cech.

It wasn't until the 73rd minute that striker Drogba, in his last Chelsea match before he departs on African Nations Cup duty with the Ivory Coast, equalised with a powerful header - the forward's 19th goal in all competitions this term.

And just two minutes later Chelsea were in front after Daniel Sturridge's cross-shot was saved by Fulham's Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer only for the rebound to go in off luckless 20-year-old defender Smalling, who had impressed on his first Premier League start.

"It was a great performance by my players," Chelsea manager Ancelotti told Sky Sports.

"In the second half we played with more determination. We wanted to win this game, it was very important," the Italian added.

Fulham boss Roy Hodgson said: "To have the lead for so long and to defend that lead for over 70 minutes and then to concede two goals was a bit tough."

Earlier, Luka Modric marked his first start since August by scoring the opener as Tottenham Hotspur beat West Ham 2-0 at White Hart Lane to go fourth in the table.

In-form Birmingham, now unbeaten in their last 11 league games, won 1-0 away to Stoke thanks to striker Cameron Jerome's 50th minute goal.

Elsewhere, England forward Darren Bent twice gave Sunderland the lead only for Blackburn Rovers to draw 2-2 while Everton beat 10-man Burnley 2-0.

Manchester City will look to build on new manager Roberto Mancini's winning start against Stoke when they travel to Wolves for Monday's late match.

Croatia midfielder Modric, out for several months with a broken leg, started and finished a length of the field move as he scored in the 11th minute.

Jermain Defoe sealed victory against his old club nine minutes from time with his 14th league goal of the season, a strike that left the England forward as the division's top scorer.

But Spurs will return to fifth place if Aston Villa win at home to Liverpool on Tuesday.

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp said a top four finish and a place in next term's Champions League would be a remarkable feat given Tottenham's position in the relegation zone when he arrived at the club last season.

"We would certainly settle for finishing in the top four from where we were last year," Redknapp said.

Defeat against their London rivals left West Ham hovering above the relegation zone and they also saw key midfielder Scott Parker make an early exit with what appeared to be a recurrence of a hamstring injury

Bent gave Sunderland a 53rd minute lead only for Morten Gamst Pedersen to equalise barely 60 seconds later.

But Bent restored the visitors advantage in the 65th minute at Ewood Park only for El-Hadji Diouf to head Rovers level.

Everton substitute James Vaughan came off the bench to score seven minutes from time at Goodison Park before South Africa's Steven Pienaar wrapped up victory in the dying seconds against a Burnley side reduced to 10 men midway through the second half after Stephen Jordan was sent-off.

Hull City v Manchester United Live

Hull City face the unenviable task of facing Manchester United at KC Stadium as the Tigers look to further aid their fight against the drop. After an excellent month in November saw Phil Brown's men pick up eight points from a possible 12, they have found the going tough into December with just a draw and two defeats from their three fixtures.Their dip in form has coincided with the absence of influential midfielder Jimmy Bullard and he will remain on the sidelines with the knee injury he suffered early in the 3-0 defeat at Aston Villa on December 5.Long-term casualty Ian Ashbee will be out until the end of the season after tearing his posterior cruciate ligament. With United in town, they will have their work cut out if they are to improve on this record although their home form is giving reason for optimism. They have not lost in their last six games on home soil since their 1-0 setback against Birmingham City on September 19.The Red Devils' continuing injury dilemma may offer more hope for the hosts.Sir Alex Ferguson's beleaguered side were hammered 3-0 at Fulham last weekend and with a back three that consisted of Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher and youngster Ritchie de Laet, the makeshift line-up found themselves swiftly up against the sword. With Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Jonny Evans, Gary Neville, Wes Brown, John O'Shea and Rafael all out injured, the Reds' crippling defensive crisis needs to be quelled as soon as possible if they are to remain in touch with leaders Chelsea.Nani, Edwin Van der Sar, Owen Hargreaves, Ryan Giggs and Federico Macheda are others who are struggling to make the festive fixtures. With the Hull clash the first of five games in a 14 day period, it could break their campaign if they don't come through it injury-free.

Echizen, Fukui

Echizen (越前市 Echizen-shi?) is a city located in Fukui, Japan.

As of August 1, 2008, the city has an estimated population of 86,562 and the density of 375 persons per km². The total area is 230.75 km².

History

Echizen city was incorporated in its present form on October 1, 2005, when the city of Takefu and the town of Imadate (from Imadate District) merged to form the new city, although it has been an important regional center for over 1,500 years. It has multiple former castle sites as well as prehistoric archeological sites. Echizen is known for its well over 300 shrines and temples. It was the home (for a year) of Murasaki Shikibu, the celebrated author of The Tale of Genji. Her father was governor of the Heian province of Echizen.

Yamato period

During the Yamato period, the area from Tsuruga to Niigata was called Koshi Province. In the year 507, a man from Echizen area ascended to the throne to become the 26th emperor of Japan, Emperor Keitai. At that time, the Takefu basin began to develop economically and culturally.

Nara period

In order to defeat the Ainu in Koshi Province, Echizen became a very important military base, as it was the closest base to the Ainu. The area that would become Echizen city became the gateway to the Hokurikudō road, and a government center was established. The area grew and became an important political, economic, and cultural center. During this period, the poet Nakatomi no Yakamori was exiled to Echizen, where he wrote some of his 40 poems collected in the Man'yōshū -- including his love letters to Sanuno Otogami no Otome. Another famous poet from the Man'yōshū, Ōtomo no Yakamochi, wrote many pieces about Echizen. Their poems can now be found in Echizen no Sato village.

Heian period

The celebrated author Murasaki Shikibu left her hometown of Kyoto only once in her life—to come to Echizen. Her father, Fujiwara Tametoki, was appointed provincial overseer of Echizen Province and Lady Murasaki came with him. She stayed for one year, and then returned home to marry Fujiwara Nobutaka. Her experiences in Echizen are said to have had a major influence on her writing The Tale of Genji, and many place names from Echizen appear in the story.

Nanboku-chō period

For about 60 years, Echizen's central area, then known as Fuchū, was an important military center. Takatsune Shiba, Constable of Echizen Province, fought with Yoshisada Nitta in the Battle of the Hino River. Shiba lost the battle, his castle was taken by Nitta, and he fled north to Asuwa Castle in Fukui City. Nitta pursued him to Fukui, but was defeated and killed by Shiba this time. Shiba returned to Fuchū and conquered both Fuchū Castle and Ōtaki Castle. The outcome of the war between the Northern and the Southern Imperial Courts was decided around the Fuchuu area. Today, a memorial to Shinzenkouji Castle can be seen at Shougaku Temple in Echizen city.

Muromachi period

Takatsune Shiba's victories in the Nanboku-chō Period allowed him to become a powerful daimyō independent of the appointed role given to him by the Ashikaga shogunate. He changed his name from Shiba to Kuratani and control of Echizen Province passed on to his offspring, rather than to another appointee. Kuratani made his home around the Ajimano area of Echizen city.

Sengoku period

During the Sengoku period, Echizen Province had a very powerful military under the command of Daimyo Asakura, who had moved the capital of the province from Fuchū to the north, near Fukui city. However, there were also lots of riots and unrest caused by Ikkō-ikki. In order to stop the riots and restore peace, Oda Nobunaga invaded Echizen Province and killed Asakura. Afterwards, he divided Fuchū among Fuwa Mitsuharu, Sassa Narimasa, and Maeda Toshiie. The three of them were known was Fuchuu Sanninshū (府中三人衆), "The Fuchū Three," for their cooperation governing the area. Part of Sassa Narimasa's castle, Komaru Castle, still stands today. Maeda Toshiie became an important daimyo and organized a large army, Fuchū being the foundation stone of his famous "hyakumangoku" domain.

Edo period

After the Battle of Sekigahara, Yuuki Hideyasu became the governor of the Fukui Domain. During this time, Honda Tomimasa, highly trusted by Tokugawa Ieyasu, was appointed as Hideyasu's chief retainer. Honda received a small piece of land and became governor of Fuchū. Fuchū, devastated by years of war, had lost its castles, roads, and buildings, and Honda is responsible for a major reconstruction of the area. He rebuilt the roads, walls, and buildings, as well as irrigation systems connected to the Hino river. Honda started the industries that still make up Takefu's base economy—blades, textiles, and industrial machinery. The Honda clan ruled the Fuchū area for nine generations—until the Meiji Restoration. Their graves can be seen at Ryuusenji in Echizen city.

Meiji period

In the second year of Meiji (1869), the area known as Fuchū was renamed Takefu. According to an ancient Min'yō called "Saibara," during the Nara and Heian periods, the area was known as Takefu, and so the ancient name was re-established. In Meiji 22, the town of Takefu was officially established.

During the Meiji Restoration, the daimyos of the Edo period were abolished and reorganized into the kazoku class. However, Honda, being only a retainer and not a daimyo, was moved into the lower shizoku class. In Meiji 3, The Honda clan rebelled against the Meiji government in protest to this demotion. This period is known as the Takefu Soudou. Finally, in Meiji 12, Honda Sukemoto was promoted to kazoku, and then made a danshaku in Meiji 17.

Shōwa and Heisei periods

In Shōwa 23 (1948), Takefu city was officially established. During the next 11 years, Takefu absorbed seven nearby villages and greatly increased in size and population. In Shōwa 31 (1956), Imadate town was established. On October 1, Heisei 17 (2005), Takefu city and Imadate town were merged to form Echizen city. The newly formed city became home to the largest number of cultural assets in Fukui prefecture.

Today, Echizen has several large electronics and apparel factories, but it is known for the large number of small businesses that flourish there; it is said that the local joke is that everyone in town addresses each other as "shacho" ("company president"). Echizen is home to a small community of Brazilians, who mostly work in a ceramic capacitor factory, and a smaller Chinese community, largely linked to the garment industry. A large contingency of foreign English teachers also lives in Echizen teaching at local high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools. These foreigners can most easily be found at their local haunts, Matsuri Sushi, Tom's Toast, Sossego and various other restaurants around town.

Famous places

Shrines

  • Soja Shrine (総社大神宮) - This is the main Shrine in Echizen city. Gods from shrines all over Echizen are worshipped together here. The citizens call it "Osanja-san." Many believers visit this shrine during spring, summer, and fall events.
  • Oshio Hachiman Shrine (大塩八幡宮) - In 887 this shrine was built by Kino Tomonaka, who was exiled to Echizen area because of a false charge against the government. He continuously prayed to clear his name of the charges for some years, and eventually was allowed to return to the capital, Nara. To display his gratitude, he built this shrine, which is now a National Important Cultural Property.
  • Omushi Shrine (大虫神社) - It is said that this shrine has more than one thousand years of history. The shrine was rebuilt in 1996. There are two figures of male gods which are National Important Cultural Properties. A large rock god, Oiwasama, is enshrined here. Pure water called Ishigami-no-mizu is used by many people to wash their hands or rinse out their mouths. This water was once used as part of the town’s water supply.
  • Hino Shrine (日野神社) - This shrine is located at the entrance of Mt. Hino, known as the Mt. Fuji of Echizen. The shrine and all of the mountain is thought to be a sacred place. There is another shrine at the top of the mountain. The Mt. Hino festival takes place during the summer. Dances are performed to honor the god of Mt. Hino. At night, participants climb Mt. Hino with lit torches to watch the sunrise from the top of the mountain. There is also an "ema" house where you can view wishes written in 1665 on wooden plaques with pictures of the seasonal harvest.
  • Ajimano Shrine (味真野神社) - This shrine worships Emperor Keitai. Kuratani Tsugutoshi, the grandson of General Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, moved into this place in the Muromachi Era (1336–1573). Inside the shrine is a part of the small wall which used to surround Kuratani’s fort.
  • Okafuto Shrine & Otaki Shrine (岡太神社、大瀧神社) - These shrines stand side by side on the top of Mt. Gongen, and a combined shrine, which was rebuilt through the advanced skills in constructing shrines in the latter half of Edo Era, lies at the foot of the mountain. The goddess of paper, -- the only one in Japan -- "Mistress Kawakami," is enshrined here. Legend says she taught people how to make paper 1,500 years ago. In 1985 these shrines were designated a National Important Cultural Property

Temples

  • Gekkouji Temple (月光寺) - During the famine from 1833 to 1844, many people starved to death. To remember these deaths, Gekkouji temple was built in 1847, and memorial services began to be held. One important part of this temple is the beautiful giant copper Buddha which is enshrined in the main hall. 500 stones on which ancestors’ names have been written are inside the body of the Buddha.
  • Hoyamaji Temple (帆山寺) - This temple is dedicated to Senju Kannon, a transformed Buddha that has 1,000 hands. It was made by a priest named Taicho in the Nara era. Other Buddha statues are also located here. For example, you can see the Nehan Buddha, a statue of the dying Buddha, along with a picture of Buddha's crying pupils on the wall behind it. A smiling Buddha, called Obinzurusan, is standing in the front gate of the temple. It is believed that one will recover from any illness by rubbing the corresponding part of the statue.
  • Injoji Temple (引接寺) - Built in 1488, Injoji was one of the main branches of the Shinseishu sect of Tendai Buddhism. There are 9 buildings in the temple, which is one of the most famous temples in the city. It’s noted for the front gate which is completely made out of zelkova. There are great sculptures in this gate; 16 Buddhist saints, a dignified lion, a carp swimming up the rapids, and more. The huge Buddha made by Shakudani rocks is also a must see.
  • Ryusenji Temple (龍泉寺) - In 1367 Ryusenji Temple was built by Tsugen-jakurei. It is part of the Sotoshu sect of Zen Buddhism. The temple was favored by the Honda family who were wealthy landowners here at the time. The temple has protected and maintained the graves of the Honda family since its foundation.
  • Ryumonji Temple (龍門寺) - This Temple has stood in the simple architecture of Zen temples for a long time. It opened in 1299 and afterward was changed into a fort. The fort became a local base of politics and military affairs. Oda Nobunaga, who was in control of the army, set up his camp here to prepare for the war against Asakura Yoshikage and the Buddhist revolts. Now you can see the ruins of the moat and fort inside the temple’s ground.
  • Kongoin Temple (金剛院) - Kongoin is in the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism, and looks like an old temple in the mountains. It was built in 1433 and moved to its present location near Takefu Station by Tomimasa Honda in 1610. Mitama Festival is held here on July 15 every year. In the festival, the silent precinct of this temple is lit up with 6,000 candles and a group of priests walk around while reading sutras.
  • Reisenji Temple (霊泉寺) - Shiba Yoshitoshi built this shrine during the Muromachi Era (1336–1573). There is a rare, 8 meter tall, black lacquered wooden statue of a standing Buddha.
  • Goshoji Temple (豪摂寺) - Goshoji Temple is one of the headquarters of Shinsyu sects in Buddhism. It is a very sober experience to walk under the valuable, decorated gate which is made of zelkova wood. The temple was built in Kyoto by Shinran in 1223. It was moved to Echizen City in 1615. The spacious temple contains Shinran Hall, Amida Hall, a warehouse of sutras, and a bell tower. Inspired after visiting the temple in 1983 the poets Tekkan Yosano and Akiko Yosano wrote 14 tankas expressing how beautifully Goshoji Temple was wreathed with the fallen leaves, and how much we are blessed by Buddha.
  • Jofukuji Temple Garden (浄福寺庭園) - Jufukuji Temple’s garden is designated one of the must-see spots in Japan, owing to its beautiful Japanese style garden with rocks, sand, and moss. The temple was made by Tairano Yorimori whose elder brother was Tairano Kiyomori, a samurai leader of the Kamakura Era. From here you can see the beautiful Mt. Hino. A big holly tree on a mound looks like a mountain. And the moss around it is appears as a wave in the sea. The garden has many seasonal flowers: camellias in the spring, azaleas in the early summer, maple leaves in the fall, and the white flowers of holly in the winter.
  • Insetsu Temple

Parks

  • Murasaki Shikibu Park (紫式部公園) - This park was built in honor of Murasaki Shikibu, the author of "The Tale of Genji" who lived for a year in Echizen with her father, Tametoki Fukuwara, governor of this area. The park was modeled after a nobleman's residence in the Heian period, and looks like a very old, rich, and elegant garden. A statue of Murasaki Shikibu stands in the park, gazing in the direction of Kyoto.
  • Ajimano Park (味真野苑) - Ajimano has a deep connection with the Manyo-shu (a Nara Era poem collaboration book). It includes 63 tragic love poems written by Nakatomino Yakamori, who was exiled to this area, and Sanono Otogamino Otome, who had to live in Nara apart from Yakamori. These poems are featured in the Manyo-shu. In this park, there is a stone monument on which 15 famous kawa poems were carved.
  • Kakyo Park (花匡公園) - This is where we can remember Emperor Keitaiz’s life in Echizen. This park has a thousand cherry blossom trees. The view of them blooming is beautiful. In fall, colored leaves are extremely beautiful. You can enjoy the four seasons here.
  • Kojiro Park (小次郎公園) - A statue of Kojiro Sasaki is watches over this park. Kojiro was a famous fencer from Fukui city. Many stones stand silently here. In the garden next to Kojiro park, various flowering cherry trees are planted. This garden allows us to enjoy the cherry trees as they change during each season.
  • Rozan Park (廬山公園) - This park, on top of Murakuni Mountain, offers a beautiful night view overlooking Echizen, Sabae, and even Fukui city.
  • Echizen no Sato (越前の里) - This park contains the old Taniguchi house, a National Treasure.
    • Manyo-kan (万葉館) - "Manyo-shu" is a royal collection of wakas, traditional Japanese poems, from the Nara era (about 1200 years ago). Some of the "Manyo-shu" wakas are said to have been written in a part of Echizen City, in Ajimano. These poems are displayed here.
    • Manyo kikka-en (万葉菊花園) - This is the Chrysanthemums Exhibition Hall. You can see life-size dolls covered with chrysanthemums, which are exhibited during the Kikuningyo Festival in Takefu Central Park. The flowers are displayed here and continue growing throughout the year. You can view the traditional way of growing mums. Some unique flowers are "nanahon-date" – a flower that branches off into seven directions, "kengai" – a flower whose petals spread out like a carpet of flowers, and "senrin-giku" – a sort of clumped up bunch of flowers. There are many other varieties to see when you visit.

Alex Ferguson says Craig Levein is right man for Scotland

SIR Alex Ferguson has backed the appointment of Craig Levein as Scotland manager and insisted it was the "obvious" choice.

Ferguson, who took charge of the national side during the 1986 World Cup after the tragic death of Jock Stein, also wished Levein all the best in his new role.

The Manchester United gaffer said: "If it was going to be a Scotsman, Craig was the obvious candidate.

"He did a good job at Dundee United and hopefully he does really well because I want to see the team qualify for the European Championships next time."

Ferguson reckons Levein will need more luck than predecessor George Burley, who was sacked after last month's humiliating 3-0 friendly defeat in Wales which followed hard on the heels of his failure to lead Scotland to next summer's World Cup.

The Old Trafford boss said: "They were unlucky to miss out on a play-off place but being unlucky is not a criteria for keeping your job."

Aberdeen boss Mark McGhee, who was interviewed for the post prior to Burley's appointment two years ago, also backed the decision to appoint Levein.

He said: "During my interview I told the SFA that if I was offered the job I would consider bringing in Craig as one of my lieutenants.

"I said that because he's qualified to be at that sort of level. As manager, he certainly fits the bill.

"Like everyone else, I'm thrilled for him and will be doing absolutely everything I can to try to help him and support him in every way possible."

Everton manager David Moyes, who has been linked with the Hampden hotseat in the past, said: "It's a difficult job because Scotland doesn't have a host of players to select from so it was always going to be hard for whoever got to take over.

"But Craig's got good enthusiasm and I'm sure he'll go into the job and give it his best shot.

"He's done a great job with Dundee United and I wish him all the best with Scotland."

Celtic gaffer Tony Mowbray also gave Levein his best wishes.

He said: "He is a young guy to be taking on a national team job but I wish him well and hope he can be successful.

Manchester United’s Half-Way Report

Well, as all who have read my blog so far this season – from the avid readers (my mum) to the likely majority who accidentally stumble upon it while looking for ‘cockney rhyming slang’ or something – I have not been best pleased at our football this season. In the words of pretty much every one of my school teachers at this, the half way stage of the academic year, United also ‘could do better and SHOULD do better’.

Merry Xmas!!

Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.

Christmas gift suggestions:
To your enemy, forgiveness.
To an opponent, tolerance.
To a friend, your heart.
To a customer, service.
To all, charity.
To every child, a good example.
To yourself, respect.

May the miracle of Christmas fill your heart with warmth and love. Christmas is the time of giving and sharing. It is the time of loving and forgiving.
Merry Christmas to Everyone!

Oh Little child
~ written by Roger J. Robicheau

Oh Little child so near the tree
The precious view you clearly see

Adorned in white, a glistened sight
A chilling warmth, it's nearly night

Excitement grows within each eye
A splendid match, so bright yet shy

You make each wish, each secret part
A ray with God, so fills your heart

Your wants are small, unselfish child
Not to be wrapped, branded or styled

A world of hope, filled full of peace
A caring call, let love increase

Next year this child so wants to be
Back out to watch, this growing tree

What of our choice as time goes by
Will hope and peace and love climb high

Baines tells Everton pals: We can’t afford to have our heads down

Leighton Baines has warned Everton teammates not to dwell on their current situation.

Sunday’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Birmingham City has left David Moyes’s side hovering just two points above the relegation zone after winning just one of their last 11 Premier League games.

"There is a feeling of frustration because Birmingham was another game that we feel we should have taken the three points,” left-back Baines told the Daily Post.

“We started so well but we are conceding goals and it is taking a lot out of us. We have to keep our heads up. We have come away with another point so it is not a complete disaster.”

Baines admits that Everton’s worryingly porous backline – they have kept only one clean sheet in 17 games – and brittle confidence are affecting performances.

“The games are coming thick and fast now so we can’t afford to have our heads down,” he said. “We have got to be as confident as we can in order to get the victories.

“Sadly when things aren’t going your way your confidence does take a step back especially when you allow the opposition to get a goal. That showed against Birmingham when they equalised.”

ROBERTO MANCINI: FRESH CRISIS BREWING FOR MANCHESTER CITY

IF WALKING into a blizzard on his second morning in the job was not bad enough, Roberto Mancini found himself enveloped by the gloom of an injury crisis.

Mancini is set to have only one of Manchester City’s regular back four available for his first game in charge against Stoke on Boxing Day.

Already missing Joleon Lescott and Wayne Bridge, neither of whom will be fit until the end of January, Mancini has lost Nedum Onouha until the new year with a calf injury while Micah Richards is doubtful after limping off against Sunderland on Saturday with the recurrence of a knee problem.

Shaun Wright-Phillips, whose boundless energy and impish skills can turn a game, has also big problems and they will get worse when kolo Toure departs, with Emmanuel Adebayor, for the African Nations Cup, although City are hoping the Ivory Coast and Togo will allow them to play against Wolves on Monday before joining up with theirnational squads.

Toure’s absence for possibly all of January – quite apart from his poor form since his £14million move from Arsenal – plus the injuries to Lescott and Bridge mean Mancini will have no choice but to make a quick foray into the transfer market.

Top of his list will be West Ham’s Matthew Upson, while Bolton’s gary Cahill, Fulham’s Brede Hangeland and Juventus’s giorgio aggravated an ankle injury and is a doubt for Boxing Day. But at least Mancini has plenty of attacking options.

It is at the back he has important for this club. You cannot win without scoring goals and my teams in Italy never played for 0-0 draws, but it is important to defend Chiellini are also on the radar. “I don’t know if January will be busy or not,” said Mancini. “We will lose Adebayor and Toure and have two or three bad injuries at the moment, so that is my main concern.”

Mancini does not want to compromise his attacking philosophy but admits if City are to achieve their ambitious top-four target they must tighten up at the back and become harder to play against all over the field. That means strikers and midfielders pressing their rivals.

“When I played, I always wanted to attack. For me that is the most important thing,” added Mancini. “When your team play well, in the end you win. This is my philosophy. This mentality is very well. The games come thick and fast over Christmas and New Year but we have a few days to work with the back line. It is important that the team has a balance.

“Sixth place in the league is not good enough for me and hopefully in a month’s time that will have improved and we will have made progress in the cup competitions. The top four is the aim and I want a good run in the FA Cup, too.
We are already in the Carling Cup semi-finals, so hopefully we can reach two finals. I know the cup competitions are important in England. In Italy they only become important at the semi-final stage.”

Emma Watson’s shocking honour! An esteemed entry into the Guinness book!

Hermione of the ‘Harry Potter’ franchisee Emma Watson has found an entry into the highly valued ‘Guinness Book of World Records’ for being the highest-paid actress of the decade. This comes as a surprise, as she races ahead of other big celebs like Angelina Jolie, Kate Winslet and others. The witch-girl of the wizarding world has weaved magic on the screen this decade and has rocketed to colossal fame basically from her wand-flicking avatar.

The renowned actress, who is brimming with youthfulness, has garnered a mammoth $5.4 billion in global box receipts. Second place, too, has surprisingly gone to her co-star Maggie Smith who portrays a teacher of Transformation subject in the Harry Potter series. But it’s ‘Gosford Park’ and ‘The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya sisterhood’ that has earned the veteran actress a whooping 55 million pound and 46.25 million pound respectively.

So, Emma Watson’s frenzy is on a new high and looking at the astonishing figures, she, surely, has a long career ahead.

Don't walk away when I'm talkin to you
This ain't no time for your bad attitude

Rob plans chat with new City boss

Robinho is keen to meet with new Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini, according to a report in The Sun.

Robinho: Wants meeting to discuss future

The Brazilian forward has blown hot and cold for City with results so far this season not considered good enough by the club's wealthy backers to keep Mark Hughes in a job - his dismissal being confirmed on Saturday evening.

Robinho has been linked with a January move to Barcelona.

However, the £32.5million signing from Real Madrid is now reported to be keen to hear former Inter Milan boss Mancini's plans for moving the club forward.

Quoted by the newspaper, Robinho said: "I want to talk with Mancini. I've heard good news about his work and City still have plenty of time to finish the season well.

"The decision for Hughes to go was down to the owners but it did not come as a surprise after all the rumours.

"But the Champions League zone is not so far for us and we are in the Carling Cup semi-finals. Performances have not been so negative as some people think."

Mancini is set to be unveiled at a press conference at 1630 GMT on Monday.
